Prepare for the 2G network shutdown: what you need to know

In 2025, Orange France will be shutting down its 2G network, joining other countries around the world in moving towards more efficient and modern 4G and 5G technologies. If you or your customers rely on devices that operate only on 2G, immediate action is required to ensure continued service and compliance.

Why is this happening?

As mobile technology advances, older network infrastructures like 2G are being retired to free up resources for faster, more secure, and more reliable networks. This means that any devices still relying on 2G connectivity will no longer function after the shutdown date.

What devices could be affected?

Devices that typically rely on 2G-only connectivity include:

  • Lift/Elevator Emergency Phones
  • Basic Phone Lines
  • Telematics and Tracking Devices
  • Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminals
  • Metering Systems
  • Medical Alert Devices

If your device operates using GSM frequency bands 900MHz or 1800MHz, it is likely affected. Check the technical specifications of your device to confirm.

What you need to do

For direct customers

If you are a business or individual using a device that relies on 2G, take the following steps:

  1. Identify 2G-Only Devices: Review all devices to determine which ones operate solely on the 2G network.
  2. Upgrade Equipment: Replace affected devices with 3G/4G-compatible models.
  3. Reinsert Your Existing Cellhire SIM: Once upgraded, insert your existing Cellhire SIM card into the new device to continue service without interruption.

Failure to take these steps could lead to service disruptions, affecting critical systems such as security alarms and emergency communication tools.

For resellers & partners

If you have sold Cellhire Light or Full MVNO SIM cards to customers, you are responsible for ensuring they are aware of the 2G shutdown. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Identify Affected Devices: Work with your customers to audit which of their devices are operating on 2G only.
  2. Inform Your Customers: Notify customers of the shutdown and urge them to upgrade their equipment to 3G/4G-compatible models.
  3. Ensure a Smooth Transition: Customers can continue using their existing Cellhire SIM card after upgrading their devices.
  4. Maintain Compliance: Devices like lift emergency phones, security alarms, and medical alert systems must remain operational to comply with safety regulations.

As a reseller, you hold the responsibility of ensuring your customers are informed and prepared. Cellhire will not be held liable for any service disruptions resulting from the 2G shutdown.

Why you must act now

Waiting too long to upgrade could result in serious service disruptions, particularly for businesses relying on 2G-based security, emergency, or operational systems. By taking proactive steps today, you can ensure uninterrupted service and compliance with evolving industry standards.
